After a software package is released, the technician deployed in the EOL (End of Line) production process can download the approved software package from the SUMS tool and start updating Electronic Control Units (ECUs) to create new vehicles.
After a new vehicle is created, a unique VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is generated and assigned to each vehicle. All the vehicle-related information that includes an IVD (Integrity Validation Data) must be entered in the SUMS tool.
There could be regular or crucial updates made to the ECUs from time to time, for example, while introducing a new feature or to fix a bug, after the vehicle is off the showroom floor and ‘on the road’. For vehicles that are already manufactured, the workshop technician can access the Software Update Management System (SUMS) app, download the updated software package, and update the vehicle.
VINS are associated with a vehicle type. For vehicles already manufactured, the VIN metadata is updated after software updates.
This topic describes the steps to download the software package for EOL production.
Download Software Package #
The Software package distribution feature entails distributing the released software package to the EOL production team for production of vehicles who will facilitate software update.
The feature set for software package distribution to the garage is yet to be implemented.
- In the Software Update Management System app, from the left navigation pane, in the Download Packages section > click Downloads. The Vehicle types with Releases page is displayed.
NOTE:
All those vehicle types that include at least one release are listed.
- To create a vehicle, select the required vehicle type from the list. The selected vehicle type page along with the software packages released till date are displayed.
NOTE:In most instances, the EOL technician downloads the latest package while manufacturing the required number of vehicles. However, all the available packages released for a vehicle type are listed on this page. Therefore, if required, an EOL technician can also download a previous software package while manufacturing new vehicles.
- Click Download to download the required software package. The Download package dialog is displayed.
- Click Confirm to proceed. A confirmation message is displayed after the software package is downloaded.
NOTE:
- The software package for the selected vehicle type is downloaded as a single zipped file.
- The zipped file contains further folders for each associated ECU, which comprises the parameter files, hex files, and the JSON files containing metadata such as IVD and version numbers for each ECU.
- The EOL technician uses a separate diagnostic tool for updating ECUs to manufacture vehicles.
- While updating the vehicle information, the EOL technician is required to verify and validate the VINs, and then add the VINs into the SUMS tool.
- After the vehicles are manufactured by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), the EOL technician adds vehicles and associates software packages by uploading the JSON files generated by a diagnostics tool. For more information, see Vehicle management.
